Who is he?

Mathew Heggem is a dance-artist, educator, non-profit administrator, etc living in Brooklyn, New York . Originally from the Pacific Northwest (Bellingham, WA), he relocated to the East Coast in 2003. Went to Goucher College to study Dance & Religion  and has done his thing throughout the states since.

Two brothers, a history of cats, an awesome mom and a family of complex affairs, he definitely had a childhood. From throwing rocks at girls and jumping off roofs to getting hit by cars and breaking up with boyfriends, life has been an experience much enjoyed.  Somewhere in there, he realized a) he was gay and b) he wanted to be in the arts. These two facts have affected his life significantly.

He began his studies in theater performance, ballet and modern dance. To date, his knowledge within the field of dance has expanded to include contemporary ballet, improvisation, partnering techniques and various traditional and contemporary cultural forms. He’s been a company member for Nicholas Leichter Dance and ClancyWorks Dance Company, and has done his own work – the most recent of which can be uncovered at www.matheggem.com.

Heggem has served the greater mid-east region as an arts educator, including Guest Artist Residencies throughout the Baltimore County School District, Faculty member for the Goucher Summer Arts Institute (MD) and Experimental Movement Concepts(PA) and teaching-artist for ClancyWorks Dance Company(MD).

As a non-profit administrator, he’s served the NYC & D.C. community as an independent contractor, consultant, and staff member in the areas of marketing, communications, web, and more recently fundraising and strategic planning.

All that at 25. What’s next?
